A Lions Dream Team…

Rugby supporters love to debate their ‘Dream Teams’ and in The Greatest Lions XV Ever, former rugby union & league star Jonathan Davies tackles that most contentious and challenging of questions: who are the fifteen best players to have represented the British & Irish Lions?

It is on Lions tours – to New Zealand, South Africa and Australia – that lasting reputations are forged in the heat of battle. It is where good players become great players. But who are the greatest of the great?

Was Willie John McBride better than Martin Johnson? Was Barry John better than Jonny Wilkinson? Was anyone better than Gareth Edwards?

As incisive and decisive as he was on the pitch, Jonathan Davies has the answer to all these questions and more in this new book launched on 20 October 2016. The Greatest Lions XV Ever is the latest title in a bestselling series by Gomer Press.

Jonathan Davies admits that one of his major regrets is that “I never played for the Lions. Much as I enjoyed playing rugby league, there is something special about being a British Lion. The camaraderie which exists when the home countries come together as a team is unique and I sincerely hope this institution continues into the future and goes from strength to strength.”

Jonathan adds “Not having played for the Lions may lend a greater objectivity to my selections in this book. This is my team based on individual performances and ultimate success achieved in a Lions jersey. It is not a team of the best players. If I had to select a Greatest Ever XV from the four home nations then Brian O’Driscoll and Martin Johnson would be the first two names on the team sheet. I hope you enjoy the book – remember it’s my opinion and I’m all too aware that opinions differ!”

The Greatest Lions XV Ever by Jonathan Davies and Alun Wyn Bevan is available for £19.99 from all good bookshops and online retailers or directly from Gomer Press on It is an official licensed product for the British & Irish Lions.

Jonathan Davies is one of world rugby’s best known personalities. For Neath, Llanelli and Wales, he was in the great tradition of Welsh outside halves, the dynamic embodiment of flair, guile and vision. As a rugby league player he scaled the heights of the game with Widnes, Warrington, Canterbury Bulldogs, North Queensland Cowboys, Wales and Great Britain.

Since retiring, he has been in great demand as a broadcaster, hosting shows on BBC1 and S4C, and providing quick-witted insight as a summarizer and pundit on international match days.

Jonathan Davies has been a wonderful supporter of Velindre Cancer Centre since 2007 and his extraordinary efforts as Velindre President have helped raise nearly £20 million pounds. His annual Velindre Celebrity Golf Day is firmly established in the golfing calendar and sells out each year. Jonathan led Velindre’s first ever overseas bike ride event, the Captains California Bike Ride, cycling 400km from Yosemite to San Francisco in September 2012 with fellow rugby legends Martyn Williams, Mike Hall, Tom Shanklin, Rhys Williams and many others. And even though this was supposed to be a one off, Jonathan donned his cycling shorts again to lead the East Coast Bike Ride from Boston to New York in September 2014. He attends various events, helps launch appeals and constantly promotes the vital work of Velindre; his wonderful efforts supporting Velindre were recognized in 2015 when he was awarded and OBE for his charitable work.

Prolific author and broadcaster Alun Wyn Bevan is a former first-class referee and headmaster, and he has been closely associated with a series of Gomer bestsellers, including Stradey Stories (2005), Grav in his Own Words (2008), Welsh Rugby Captains (2010), Alun Wyn Jones’s World Cup Year (2011), Phil Bennett’s The Greatest Scarlets XV Ever (2014) and Gareth Edwards’s Great Rugby Moments (2015).

Peter Jackson, sports journalist and author, spent 35 years at The Daily Mail and has long been recognized as one of our best rugby writers.
