On the 11th of October Wales celebrates the 100th birthday of T Llew Jones, the King of Children’s Literature in Wales. Events have been taking place throughout Wales since January, but one of the major highights will be a whole day of celebrations in the Coed y Byn area of Ceredigion on the 10th of October.

"The Centenary Commitee have been working hard all year to co – ordinate, supprt and promote the events taking place throughout Wales. On the 10th of October we have our own event, one of thr highlights of the year where we’ll be joined by T Llew’s family and the public to celebrate in Coed y Bryn and the surrounding areas. This is where T Llew himself spent most of his life and worked as a head master" Heulwen Davies, Co ordinator of the T Llew Jones Centenary.

The commitee’s events begin at 11:15, with the unveilling of the first of three information boards which portray T Llew’s connection with the area and his contributuon to Welsh literature and culture. Emyr Llywelyn, T Llew’s son will unveil the board before being joined by young performers from Ysgol Bryn Saron.

At 12:45, T Llew’s daughter Eira Prosser will be unveilling the second information board at Cwm Alltcafan and joined by none other than Tudur Dylan and Mererid Hopwood.

Ysgol Coed y Bryn will house a multi media exhibition of work inspired by T Llew between 15:30 – 18:30. The exhibition includes fideos, art and creative wrting and has been prepared by pupils at Ysgol T Llew Jones, Aberbanc, Llandysul, Talgarreg, Pontsian, Coed y Bryn and Dyffryn Teifi as well as work produced during the Ceredigion ‘yong writers squads’ sessions at Llangrannog.

At 16:30 Iolo Jones, T Llew’s son, will unveil the final information board outside Coed y Bryn Village Hall. Iolo will be joined by young performers from Ysgol Coed y Bryn, Talgarreg, Llandysul and Pontsian and Aberbanc.

As with all ‘special’ birthdays there must be a tea party! From 16:30 – 18:30 the public are invited to join the commitee and T Llew’s family in a tea party at Coed y Bryn village hall, supported by the Hall’s Commitee.

"We hope to welcome children and adults from all corners of Wales to join us and T Llew’s family during this special day. All these events are free of charge and everyone is welcome. This will be a an unique opportunity to come together on T Llew’s ‘home turf’ to celebrate his achievments and his contribution to Wales" Heulwen Davies.

The day will come to a close with a centenary concert at Coed y Bryn Village Hall from 19:30. Artists include none other than Dafydd Iwan, Brodyr Parc Nest, pupils from Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi and the evening will be presented by another of Ceredigion’s succesful writers, Ceri Wyn Jones. The evening will be a mixture of music, poetry and an opportunity to listen to the artists discussing their personal memories of T Llew Jones.

"I’m eternally grateful to T Llew for his friendship and his support. Amongst many happy memories I recal his presence on the cricket field, his unique contribution to several poetry contests and the way he was always so grateful for every prize or national accolade. He was like a Welsh pied piper for the children and young people of Wales" Aled Gwyn, Parc Nest.

All tickets for the concert have now sold out.

Can’t make it to Ceredigion? Don’t worry! S4C has a series of programmes dedicated to T Llew between the 6th and 11th of October, starting with a new insightful documentart presented by Beti George on the 6th at 21:30.

BBC Radio Cymru also have programmes between the 1st – 11th of October including extracts of interviews with T Llew himself as well as musical performances of T Llew’s most famous poems performed by Gai Toms and the Carcharorion.
