Adelina Patti was one of the best-known opera stars of the nineteenth century. She was a tiny figure with an enchanting soprano voice – and wherever she sang, audiences flocked to see her. Amongst the diva’s most fervent admirers was the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) but she was also a favourite with the people of Wales, and to their delight, chose to make Craig-y-Nos Castle her ‘Home Sweet Home’. She lived in this idyllic spot for over forty years.

The story encompasses the main events in the soprano’s turbulent life, with reference to her three husbands as well as famous personalities of her day. When Baron Cederstrom placed the Castle for sale shortly after Patti’s death, the house was purchased by the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital Association, providing unexpected irony at the final curtain. Today, the castle is privately owned and run as a hotel, while the grounds form part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Patti Theatre survives as a venue for operatic performances, as does the fascinating story of the beautiful and charismatic Adelina Patti.
