Manylion

Poems from the sixth century speak to us with raw emotional power in this classic new translation by Gwyn Thomas. In over a hundred short, rhymed odes Gododdin commemorates the encounter of 300 Britons with a vast army of Angles at Catraeth, the modern day Catterick, and recounts how that conflict ended in the glorious and heroic defeat of the Britons. Gwyn Thomas' rhythmic rendition of the medieval text along with his enlightening and authoritative Introduction offers a memorable perspective on this resonant poetry of European significance. The awdlau, attributed to Aneirin, are set in the kingdoms of southern Scotland and northern England, or yr Hen Ogledd - the Old North - as the region is still called in Welsh. Some of these odes are probably the oldest British literature. Gwyn Thomas is Emeritus Professor of Welsh at the University of Bangor, Gwynedd and a former National Poet of Wales.
