In Second-world-war North Wales, Sabel Felix is surrounded by refugees. There are the Eltons, for example, the adventurous evacuees who remind her of those children she has read about in boarding-school stories. But she also has to contend with grown-up professionals, priceless works of art and her own suspicions. Put together, they contrive to confuse and compel Sabel. What is more, they draw her deeper and deeper into the dark...

This is a work of fiction based on historical events, taking as its background the wartime exiling of the National Gallery's paintings for safekeeping in the Manod caves on the edges of Snowdonia..
