In Second-world-war North Wales, Sabel Felix is surrounded by refugees. There are the Eltons, for example, the adventurous evacuees who remind her of those children she has read about in boarding-school stories. But she also has to contend with grown-up professionals, priceless works of art and her own suspicions. Put together, they contrive to confuse and compel Sabel.
