This is the true story of the Great Escape in Wales.
Forget the films and the fiction. This was the real thing. In March 1945, 67 German prisoners of war were on the run!
Their daring escape from a camp in Bridgend, South Wales, led to a massive manhunt involving thousands of troops, police and civilians. Even Boy Scouts and Girl Guides joined in the chase.
It was a time of fear and panic – this was, after all, the biggest wartime break-out from a British camp. But for all its drama, it was also a time of high comedy. And, as Herbert Williams demonstrates so keenly, for all its acrimony, it was also a time of great humanity.
Read all about it: in the words of those who took centre-stage, also in press-clippings and the new and archive photographs that accompany this breathless account of bravado and bravery, of folly and failure on both sides.
"This is the most forgotten story of the Second World War" (Byron Rogers)
"The dramatic story of the Germans’ Great Escape is brilliantly told. Herbert Williams weaves the details of the escape and manhunt into a gripping and vivid human interest narrative, full of strands and subplots and, here and there, the relief of comedy. It’s a tremendous read." (Trevor Fishlock).
